Watch a Typical Morning Walk at the Ranch

Give your dog a little extra summer adventure this month!

Try one of these simple activities together:

  • Freeze a few dog-safe treats inside an ice cube.

  • Take a slow “sniffari” walk and let your dog choose the route.

  • Hide treats around the house for a treasure hunt.

  • Set up a sprinkler or shallow splash area.

  • Teach a silly new trick, such as spinning, waving, or putting toys away.

Your dog may not clean the entire house, but putting away one tennis ball still deserves a standing ovation

August Dog Fact

A dog’s nose is not only much more sensitive than ours—it also helps the dog experience a constantly changing information map. A quick sniff can reveal who recently passed through an area, what animals may be nearby, whether food has been present, and countless other details humans cannot detect.

That is why allowing time to sniff is not wasted walking time. For a dog, it is closer to reading the neighborhood news, checking social media, and reviewing several restaurant menus at once.

Are Dogs Secretly Eavesdropping?

You may want to be careful what you say around the dog! A 2026 study published in Science found that certain exceptionally talented dogs can learn the names of new objects simply by overhearing conversations between people. These “gifted word learner” dogs did not always need someone to speak directly to them. Some were able to listen while people discussed a toy and later identify the correct object by name. This ability appears to be rare, so don’t be too disappointed if your dog still believes every word in the English language means “treat.” However, the research shows just how carefully some dogs observe human conversations, movements, and attention.

Try It at Home

Choose two toys with clearly different appearances and give each one a simple name. Use the toy’s name naturally while playing with it. After several days, place both toys nearby and ask your dog to find one by name. Your dog may surprise you—or proudly return with a sock, which was not one of the available choices.

A Little Ranch Wisdom

One of the joys of caring for so many different dogs is seeing that fun does not look exactly the same for everyone.

One dog’s perfect day includes racing through a sprinkler with five friends. Another prefers a slow exploration beneath the trees. Some are devoted ball athletes, while others believe the true purpose of a ball is to watch a human repeatedly throw it away.

Dogs benefit when they are given safe opportunities to move, sniff, explore, socialize, rest, and make choices based on their individual personalities.

That balance—adventure when they want it and relaxation when they need it—is a big part of a happy dog’s life.

Happy August!

We hope your month is filled with joyful walks, curious noses, ridiculous sleeping positions, wet paws, favorite toys, and plenty of reasons to smile.

Thank you for allowing the Dog Dude Ranch team to be part of your dogs’ lives. We love learning from them, laughing with them, and giving them the freedom to enjoy the wonderfully important business of being dogs.

With love and belly rubs,The Dog Dude Ranch Team
